NEWS FROM UP NORTH— AUGUST 2007
August started off with a fair at Kendal – and it was raining, yet again. We’re supposed to have had more total rain up Northwest, than the rest of the country, but the weather presenter came out with a perplexing statement – that we’re better able to deal with it here. (Webbed feet?) Add in all the other recent bad news, and the fair was an understandably, gloomy event – and it had been the same at a fair on the previous day, according to customers who had been there. What the public needs, is some good old fashioned ‘silly season’ stories – like a Loch Ness type monster caught breaking the new Lake Windermere speed limit, or the abduction of the Big Brother housemates, by aliens (please!). Wait a minute – I think I have one; I sold a whole stack of foreign modern cards, showing people in national costumes at Kendal. I did – honest!
We have been supplying postcards for roadshows, put on to provide background information on the BBC’s ‘Coast’ programmes. The idea is for visitors to be able to compare the current view with what it was like in the past, and consider what it might be like in the future. If you want to catch one of these, they will be at:
Aberdeen Maritime Museum – 9th and 10th August
Time and Tide Museum, Great Yarmouth -16th and 17th August
The Deep, Hull – 23rd and 24th August
National Glass Centre, Sunderland – 30th and 31st August
National Maritime Museum, London – 22nd September
Card of the Month
As this postman juggles his Diablo, we are having to juggle postal sales around the current, intermittent, postal strikes. What’s going to hit us next? A plague of locusts, perhaps?
